Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful nerve and skin infection which is a result of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) that also causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox, the virus can stay in your body for years and in later life develop into shingles. This may happen at any time, with the risk being higher in people aged over 60. Shingles normally starts as a very painful rash on one side of the body or face. The shingles rash causes blisters which generally scab over within 7 to 10 days then clearing up in approximately 2 to 5 weeks. Certain instances of shingles can affect one of the eyes this is known as ophthalmic shingles. This happens when the virus is reactivated in part of the trigeminal nerve, a nerve which controls movement and sensation in the face. Approximately 33% percent of people will develop shingles at some stage in their life and unlike chickenpox, you can develop shingles more than once. Receiving a Zostavax® shingles vaccine will lower your chances of getting it again.
