What is PEP?
HIV PEP stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus Post-exposure prophylaxis. It is an antiretroviral medicine (ART) which stops HIV infection after a recent possible exposure to the virus.
How does PEP work?
HIV takes several days to become established in the body after exposure. HIV PEP medication prescribed at this time will aid the immune system to stop the virus from replicating in the infected cells of the body. The infected cells then die within a short time without production of more virus cells stopping the HIV exposure from becoming a lifelong infection.
