With a reported 3-6% of dogs carrying the rabies virus in Chiang Mai and Bangkok, it must certainly be considered. Bats, monkeys and other mammals can also carry the virus and it is suggested that the following groups in Thailand should get vaccinated against rabies:
1. People working with or who are in close contact with animals. For example, animal shelter workers, veterinarians, wildlife professionals, and researchers.
2. Those involved in outdoor activities in remote regions where the risk of being bitten by animals is high.
3. People who are visiting or staying in remote regions within Thailand.
4. Children, as they generally like to play with animals, and may not report bites for post-exposure treatment.
CM Mediclinic have two rabies vaccinations available, Rabipur and Verorab. Both vaccines require a course of three doses for protection. The second dose is given 7 days after the first then followed by the third dose, 21 days after the first. The doses are given via a painless injection in the upper arm. Prevent yourself from getting shingles with Zostavax® shingles vaccinations available at CM Mediclinic. Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful nerve and skin infection which is a result of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) that also causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox, the virus can stay in your body for years and in later life develop into shingles. This may happen at any time, with the risk being higher in people aged over 60. Shingles normally starts as a very painful rash on one side of the body or face. The shingles rash causes blisters which generally scab over within 7 to 10 days then clearing up in approximately 2 to 5 weeks. Certain instances of shingles can affect one of the eyes this is known as ophthalmic shingles. This happens when the virus is reactivated in part of the trigeminal nerve, a nerve which controls movement and sensation in the face. 33% percent of people will develop shingles at some stage in their life and unlike chickenpox, you can develop shingles more than once. Receiving a Zostavax® shingle vaccine will lower your chances of getting it again.

Following the completion of trials for a dengue vaccine which will be commercially available by July next year, we would like to list the best ways to prevent getting dengue by avoiding being bitten by an infected mosquito:
1) Use mosquito repellent containing DEET (N-diethylmetatoluamide) , although please beware that products containing DEET should not be used in children younger than two years. 2) Wear protective, loose-fitting clothing. Mosquitoes are able to bite through tight-fitting clothes. Trousers, long-sleeved shirts and socks and shoes (not sandals) are ideal.
3) Sleep under a mosquito net to avoid being bitten at night. 4) Be aware of your environment. The Aedes mosquito which causes dengue is easily identifiable by the distinctive black and white stripes on its body. They breed in standing water in crowded urban environments. Such as toilets as well as water that gathers inside a stack of old tires or your plant pots etc. 5) Use an effective electronic mosquito trap indoors.
BEWARE THE BITE. STOP DENGUE!
A good guide to preventing the Aedes mosquito from breeding has been published by the Singapore government which can be downloaded below:
